This is a 1979 hardcover (book club) edition of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It is indicated to be based upon a screenplay by Harold Livingston and a story by Alan Dean Foster. This is the first novel (Star Trek #1) in the long-running set of novels based upon the original television series.
Gene Roddenberry is of course the well-known creator of Star Trek. He died, at the age of seventy, in 1991, just twelve years after writing this book. This book includes a Preface by Admiral James T. " More importantly, it also includes an "Author's Preface by Mr.
Roddenberry, in which he explains why Star Trek is so important to him: I have always looked upon the Enterprise and its crew as my own private view of Earth and humanity in microcosm. If this is not the way we really are, it seems to me most certainly a way we ought to be. Roddenberry was a prolific screenwriter but this book is, to my knowledge at least, the only novel that he ever published.
